The Common Admission Test (CAT) is India's most prestigious MBA entrance examination, conducted annually by one of the IIMs on a rotational basis. CAT 2026 is expected to be held in November 2026, with registration opening in August 2026. Over 2.5 lakh aspirants compete for approximately 5,500 seats in the 20 IIMs and thousands of seats in other top B-schools like FMS Delhi, XLRI, SPJIMR, MDI, and IIFT.
At Shortcut Maths Coaching Institute in Jadavpur, Kolkata, our CAT program is mentored by IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad alumni. In CAT 2025, our students achieved an average percentile of 96.5, with 15 students scoring 99+ percentile. Our structured 8-month program has been refined over 10 years of consistent results.

- Practice TITA questions extensively
- Target: 2 full mocks + 4 sectional tests per week
📅 Months 7-8: Revision & Fine-Tuning (September-October 2026)
- Daily revision of formula sheets and shortcut notes
- 3-4 full mocks per week with detailed analysis
- Focus on exam temperament and time management
- VARC: Read complex articles from The Economist, NYT, The Guardian
- Target: Consistent 99+ percentile in mocks before the actual exam
Quantitative Aptitude (QA) Strategy for 99+ Percentile
To score 99+ percentile in QA, you need to attempt approximately 18-20 questions with 90%+ accuracy. The QA section in CAT has become increasingly arithmetic-heavy in recent years.
Topic-wise Weightage & Priority
- Arithmetic (45%): Percentage, Profit-Loss, SI-CI, Ratio-Proportion, Mixtures, Averages, Time-Speed-Distance, Time-Work, Pipes-Cisterns
- Algebra (20%): Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations, Inequalities, Functions, Logarithms
- Geometry & Mensuration (20%): Triangles, Circles, Quadrilaterals, Polygons, Coordinate Geometry, Mensuration 2D & 3D
- Modern Math (15%): Permutation & Combination, Probability, Set Theory, Sequence & Series
Shortcut Maths Approach to QA
At our Jadavpur center, we don't just teach formulas. We teach problem-solving frameworks:
- Option Elimination: In MCQs, always look at options before solving. Sometimes you can eliminate 2-3 options without full calculation.
- Approximation: CAT options are usually spaced apart. Learn when to approximate.
- Reverse Plugging: For algebra questions, plug in options to find the answer faster.
- Smart Variables: Use LCM method or assume values (100, 1 unit) to simplify word problems.
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) Strategy
DILR is the most unpredictable section in CAT. In some years, it's calculative (DI-heavy); in others, it's logical (LR-heavy). To score 99+ percentile, you need to solve 4-5 sets out of 6 correctly.
Types of DILR Sets in CAT
- Data Interpretation: Tables with multiple variables, Bar-Line combination charts, Pie charts with ratios, Caselets (sports, business scenarios)
- Logical Reasoning: Arrangements (Circular, Linear, Matrix), Scheduling & Timetables, Routes & Networks, Games & Tournaments, Quant-based LR
3-Minute Rule for DILR
At Shortcut Maths, we teach the 3-Minute Rule:
- Spend first 3 minutes reading all 6 sets. Don't solve yet.
- Rate each set: Easy (⭐), Medium (⭐⭐), Hard (⭐⭐⭐)
- Solve Easy sets first, then Medium. Attempt Hard only if time permits.
- Never spend more than 10-12 minutes on a single set.
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC) Strategy
VARC tests your reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and language skills. To score 99+ percentile, attempt 20-22 questions with 85%+ accuracy.
Reading Comprehension (24 questions - 70% of VARC)
RC passages in CAT come from diverse topics: Philosophy, Psychology, Science & Technology, Economics, Sociology, Art & Culture, and History. The key to mastering RC is daily reading practice.
Daily Reading Schedule (Start NOW)
- The Hindu Editorial: 20 minutes (builds vocabulary and comprehension)
- Aeon Essays / The Guardian Long Reads: 15 minutes (builds comfort with complex, abstract topics)
- The Economist: 15 minutes (builds comfort with data-heavy, business articles)
- Fiction/Non-fiction books: 20 minutes before sleep (builds reading stamina)
VA Questions Strategy
- Para Jumbles: Look for introductory sentences, pronouns, chronology, and connecting words. Our "Chain Method" helps solve PJ in 90 seconds.
- Para Summary: Identify the main argument. Eliminate options that are too narrow, too broad, or introduce new information.
- Odd Sentence Out: Find the sentence that doesn't share the common theme or introduces a contrast.
Mock Test Strategy for CAT 2026
Mock tests are the heart of CAT preparation. At Shortcut Maths, our students take 40+ full-length mocks before the actual exam on exam.theshortcutmaths.com.
How to Analyze a Mock Test (Spend 3-4 hours)
- Overall Score Analysis: Check your percentile, not just raw score. Compare with previous mocks.
- Sectional Breakdown: Identify which section pulled you down. Is it accuracy or attempt rate?
- Question-level Analysis: For every wrong/unattempted question, understand the correct approach. Maintain a notebook.
- Time Analysis: Did you spend too much time on any section? Were you left with unattempted easy questions?
- Topic-wise Accuracy: Identify 2-3 weak topics per section. Dedicate next 3 days to them.
GD-PI-WAT Preparation for IIMs
After CAT, the real battle begins - Group Discussion (GD), Personal Interview (PI), and Written Ability Test (WAT). At Shortcut Maths, our IIM alumni mentors conduct mock GD-PI sessions starting from December.
PI Preparation Areas
- Academics: Be ready to explain concepts from your graduation subjects.
- Work Experience: If experienced, know your company, industry, and role in depth.
- General Awareness: Read newspapers daily. Know about Budget 2026-27, major policy changes, and global events.
- Why MBA: Prepare a genuine, non-generic answer. Link it to your career goals.
- Hobbies & Interests: Be prepared for deep questions about whatever you mention.

Q1. Is 8 months enough for CAT preparation?
Yes, 8 months is sufficient if you study 4-6 hours daily consistently. Working professionals should aim for 10-12 months. Our 8-month intensive batch at Shortcut Maths has produced consistent 99+ percentilers.
Q2. Can I crack CAT without coaching?
Self-study is possible but coaching provides structured material, peer competition, expert guidance, and mock tests that significantly improve your chances. About 60% of 99+ percentilers have some form of coaching support.
Q3. What is the ideal number of mock tests for CAT?
We recommend 30-40 full-length mocks and 100+ sectional tests. Start mocks from Month 4. Taking fewer mocks with deep analysis is better than many mocks without analysis.
Q4. Which section is most difficult in CAT?
For most students, DILR is the most challenging due to its unpredictability. VARC is difficult for non-English medium students. QA is generally the most scoring section for engineering students.
Q5. Do you have weekend batches for working professionals?
Yes! Our Saturday-Sunday intensive batch (10 AM - 5 PM) at Jadavpur is specifically designed for working professionals. We also provide recorded sessions for missed classes.
